Arson suspected in Crown Mines fire

TWO pieces of evidence which may help uncover the cause of Sunday morning's fire in Crown Mines are currently undergoing forensic analysis.

Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Percy Morokane said a container with liquid was found alongside a "paper torch" in the building that was razed to the ground.

Morokane said it was this evidence that led police to suspect the fire may have been caused deliberately.

"A container with a liquid inside was found at the scene of the fire. Alongside it was a paper torch. We don't as yet know what the liquid is hence we sent it for forensic analysis," he said.

"We do not want to speculate except to say that there is a strong suspicion of arson.

"The matter has now been handed over to the police and they will be charged with bringing the investigation to conclusion."

Police at Central Johannesburg station were not available for comment.

The fire, believed to have started at 3am, burnt a chicken wholesaler, sweet warehouse and a furniture and decor factory.
