Mineworkers set to down tools over pay

MORE than 6000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers at Kumba Iron Ore, a division of Anglo American in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, will down tools over pay increases.

The union has already served the employer with a strike notice.

Union spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said they have taken a decision to embark on a protected strike because they were not happy with the pay offer.

The union is demanding a pay rise of between 7,5percent and 10percent, as per workers categories, until further salary increase talks next year. But the employer is offering between 7percent and 9,5percent on a two-year deal.

The union also wants the employer to pay a R3500 retention bonus for its members.

Meanwhile the strike at Northam Platinum has entered its fifth week, as the union reiterated that it will not accept the employer's revised offer of 8,5percent from 8percent.
