Final salute for Comrade Willy

POLITICIANS, academics and former freedom fighters are to attend the burial of businessman Willy Baloyi in Makgofe, near Seshego, today.

Baloyi, a former SANDF commander in Pretoria, died on September 22 after a short illness. He joined the defence force in 1994 as a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe.

After resigning from the army in 2004, Baloyi went into business in Pretoria and he was instrumental in the formation of the Seshego Youth Congress.

A former teacher at Kgabo High School, Baloyi skipped the country to join the struggle against apartheid and underwent military training in Zimbabwe, Angola, Uganda, Zambia and Botswana.

Childhood friend and top Limpopo politician Jacob Raphosa said: "We have lost a great soldier. He was one of of the unselfish comrades who fought for the liberation of this beloved country of ours.

"We will remember Comrade Willy for always wanting to help the poor and also for his passion to improve the educational system."
