This is not the ANC of old

HOLDING the National Heritage Day event at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium to coincide with the ANC's national general council leaves a lot to be desired.

It is a matter that all democrats in the ruling party and civil society should be cautioned about.

It is an open secret that this national event will regrettably be the NGC's closing rally. Is it not also a pay-back event for NGC service-providers?

The ANC and the mass democratic movement accused the IFP bantustan regime and subsequent IFP-led KwaZulu-Natal government of turning government events into party-political gatherings at the exclusion of other parties and the community.

These concerns will be gauged by seating arrangements, songs and regalia at tomorrow's event.

Our leadership should shoulder the blame for the polarisation of our society and should not shed crocodile tears over a new culture of tenderpreneurs and graft.

The ANC provincial government still accuses the IFP of manipulating the annual King Shaka Day event at KwaDukuza.

It is true that power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. But this stands against the liberation movements and the ANC's values and culture. Something has gone wrong.

This event will put the ANC in the spotlight on its proclaimed organisational and leadership renewal commitment, behaviour and action. How does the ANC of Jacob Zuma differ from Inkathagate? It probably depends on who is in power. Or is because the more things change the more they remain the same?

The ANC should stop its complacency and project its historical support as the liberator of all our people as static. The NGC discussion documents and organisational report failed to reflect that ANC seats in Parliament decreased by 30 under President Zuma.
