Students in the dark over extra tuition

THE cabinet has reiterated that there will be no national recovery programme for matrics who lost out on weeks of teaching time during the recent teachers' strike.

Speaking at a press briefing in Parliament yesterday, government spokesperson Themba Maseko said "at this point in time there is no national decision to cancel the school holidays".

"Various provinces are putting plans in place to support learners.

"Some provinces might consider cancelling the holidays, others not.

"The decision is being left to provinces and schools."

The plans include "special tuition and revision programmes including weekend and holiday classes".

But with just 38 days to go before matrics begin their final exams, he conceded that many students and schools were still in the dark about whether their own schools will be open for extra tutoring during the holidays.

"That is exactly why Minister of Education Angie Motshekga will be meeting with education MECs, to find out what the recovery plans are and how these are being communicated."

He said: "The protests taking place in parts of the country by learners we consider to be totally unfortunate.

"We condemn it in the strongest possible terms."
