Man kills gran over funeral arrangements

He struck his grandmother with an axe, even as she tried to flee. He also attacked his aunt, who is now in a serious condition

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Manyapye village near Seshego, Limpopo, for allegedly killing his grandmother and wounding his aunt during an argument over funeral arrangements, police said on Wednesday.

"The 85-year-old woman was in the house with her daughter around  3pm [on Tuesday], when the grandson started exchanging sour words with them," Warrant Officer Mothemane Malefo said.

"He suddenly grabbed an axe and hacked his grandmother several times on the head and upper body.

"The old woman tried to run away, but she fell down at the entrance of the house and died.

"He continued his rampage by striking his aunt several times on the arms and legs until she also collapsed. She was rushed to Seshego Hospital in a serious condition."

The argument was apparently over the funeral of another aunt who  died recently. The family had been preparing to bury her in the village this Saturday, but the grandson was against this.

After the murder the alleged killer went to a nearby school and told a teacher what had happened.

"The teacher called the police and they arrested him at his home  a short while later."
