'Have mercy on child molester'

CONVICTED child rapist Lucky Vusimuzi Khumalo says he does not deserve to go jail for the rest of his life because his victims did not lose their ability to bear children in future

Khumalo, 35, raped two girls now aged 7 and 8 years in 2007 near a railway station in Thembisa.

He was convicted of the rapes in June.

Through his legal aid representation, Khumalo said sentencing him to life in prison will be like throwing him into the deep end.

He said he should be sentenced to a number of years and that the sentences should run concurrently because he raped both girls at the same time, spot and place.

Khumalo dropped a bombshell when he told the court to consider that he is a sickly HIV-positive man who lived on medication.

This evoked emotions from one of the parents who could not stop crying throughout the proceedings.

His defence lawyer said: "We understand that the children were injured and the emotional scars may live forever, but the fortunate part is that the girls survived and their injuries are not that bad."

State prosecutor Advocate Nthabiseng Riba retaliated by saying no other sentence would suit Khumalo than a life term.

"What does a 33-year-old man see in a 5-year-old? He murdered the children's self-respect," Riba said.

She said it was unfortunate she did not know that Khumalo was HIV positive when the charges were laid because she would have added more charges.

"He knew he was HIV positive, so he literally killed the two girls ... The fact that he knew he had HIV should be looked at as an aggravating factor. He put them in danger of being infected," Rabi said.

Khumalo was expected to be sentenced today.
