Police seize R2m abalone

THE Hawks and the Crime Intelligence Unit in Free State seized R2,2million worth of abalone that was being transported from Bloemfontein to Gauteng yesterday.

At least 19 bags of abalone weighing 455kg were seized and four suspects between the ages of 21 and 41 years from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, were arrested.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mmako Phiri said: "Crime Intelligence working together with the Hawks followed information about abalones to be transported from Bloemfontein to Gauteng on the Bulfontein Road. We followed it up and later spotted two vehicles on the same road. The vehicles were a black Isuzu bakkie with Gauteng registration and a white Golf with Eastern Cape registration."

The four will appear in court soon to face charges of illegal possession of abalone.
