Charity groups get cash from Mopani district

THREE charity organisations in the Mopani district have received R110000 each at a Charity Cup gala dinner held in Tzaneen

They are Hlovani Drop-in-Centre from the Greater Tzaneen municipality, Selematsela from BaPhalaborwa, and Phedishanang Drop-in-Centre from GaSekororo in the Maruleng municipality.

The gala dinner on Saturday was organised to raise money for the NGOs - ahead of the annual Mopani District Executive Mayor's Charity Tournament - played at NkowaNkowa Stadium on Sunday.

The Limpopo tournament featured two local teams and Premiership giants SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates.

The tournament was officially launched five years ago and so far more than 17 charity organisations have benefitted.

Mopani mayor Joshua Matlou said about R1,2million was raised during the gala dinner.

The money will be distributed to other charity organisations in the five local municipalities.

Matlou also presented track suits and R20000 to the Bakhegula Bakhegula, a pensioners' soccer team from NkowaNkowa near Tzaneen.

Bakhegula won a soccer trophy and certificate at the international Veterans' Championship in Boston, US, in July.

"We could not forget a team that made our country proud by winning a tournament in a foreign country," Matlou said.
