LIMPOPO police are investigating a murder case after a woman was allegedly raped and then strangled at Mokgoloboto village outside Tzaneen yesterday.

Area police spokesperson Warrant Officer Seth Magadzi said the deceased's body was found dumped near the busy Lydenburg-Tzaneen road by a passer-by at about 1am on Monday.

Magadzi said they suspected the woman might have been kidnapped from somewhere before she was raped, killed and her body dumped in the area.

He said the suspects were still unknown. He appealed to the community who might shed light on the matter to contact the nearest police with information.

According to Magadzi, the deceased had been identified as Mijaji Maria Sambo, 58.

"We appeal to families who might have lost a loved one to contact the Ritavi police to identify the body at a local government mortuary," he said.

Magadzi, however, warned women not to go out with strangers as that could be very dangerous and they were pitting their lives on the line.

The incident happened shortly before the rounding off of Women's Month.

Meanwhile, a resident of Mokgoloboto village, who did not want his name revealed, told Sowetan that the village was plagued by a high crime rate because there was no electricity.

"The lack of electricity in the village makes it a criminal's paradise. People who commit crimes do so and disappear into the dark without a trace," she said.
