Two drivers burn beyond recognition

POLICE in Polokwane are desperately trying to establish the identity of the victims who were burnt to ashes after their cars apparently collided and burst into flames.

The horrific accident happened on N1 North outside Polokwane on Saturday.

Police fear that more people might have died in the raging fire that left ashes on the road and unidentifiable cars. They are also struggling to establish the gender of the victims.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoape said it appeared that the two cars collided and caught fire and burnt the drivers of both cars to ashes.

He said an investigation had been launched to find out if there had been other passengers in the cars since it was even difficult to find the remains of the two.

"The cars have been taken for experts' investigation because it is very difficult to determine if they were the only two casualties in the cars," Ngoape said.

The police said the two cars involved were being kept in the police pound for forensic investigation to determine the identity of the owners.

But Ngoape said the police were determined to find the owners of the cars and were relying on technology used by fire scene investigators.

"After determining the owners of the cars we will inform their next of kin."

A culpable homicide docket has been opened and experts are busy with investigations," Ngoape said.

He said they were concerned about an increase in road accidents on the N1 North. The road was becoming deadly, especially with accident occurring in the morning between 3am and 6am.
