Cops vow to stop mayhem

VAAL police have vowed to arrest unruly public servant strikers who intimidate non-strikers.

Police said they had witnessed threats allegedly uttered by union members against those who were not participating in the nation-wide wage strike.

Threats

Major-General Deliwe de Lange said they were not going to tolerate such behaviour.

"We have noted that there have been threats against employees who are willing to work. Most threats and intimidation are against health sector workers.

"We are going to apply aggressive policing against those behind the threats. We are not going to sit and witness state properties being attacked."

De Lange said she was forced to deploy her members to patrol inside and outside Sebokeng Hospital, where most of the intimidation and threats had been reported to the police.

Ward patrol

On Friday police were patrolling inside the hospital and others kept guard outside the operating theatre, maternity and ICU wards.

She said various union members entered the hospital and pretended to be volunteers with the aim of intimating nurses on duty.

De Lange said nurses who had returned to work on Friday were forcibly removed.
