Boost for health system

OVER 400 health professionals have been appointed between April and June 2010, the Gauteng health department said yesterday.

The department has done this "to ensure access and the delivery of quality health care services in Gauteng's public facilities", it said.

A total of 19 medical doctors, 28 medical specialists, 270 professional nurses, 58 staff nurses, 27 social workers and 34 pharmacists were employed.

Currently 500 community health workers that were trained by the department were also on the job.

"Together, these health professionals are contributing to the provision of quality health services in clinics, hospitals and health programmes."

The department had also sent more than 1900 health professional trainees to different Gauteng health facilities.

All community health centres now had resident doctors. The majority of department clinics were supported by a doctor because of appointments and initiatives.

"In the last financial year alone about 19million people (sought) medical care and treatment in Gauteng's clinics and community health centres."
