'ANC will not interfere in IFP leadership row'

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal says it has no interest in determining who should lead the IFP.

"As the ANC, we want to put on record that neither the ANC nor its president has an interest in who the leader of the IFP is now or in the future," ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Sihle Zikalala said yesterday.

Zikalala was responding to media reports that President Jacob Zuma had advised IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi to step down. This follows recent leadership squabbles and dwindling support that have hit the party.

He said the ANC would continue to work with the IFP regardless of who its leader was.

On Monday it was reported that Zuma and Buthelezi met on July 16, and that Zuma reportedly advised Buthelezi to step down and remain the party's honorary president.

"Our relationship with the IFP is for the good cause of the people, especially that we have to work together to achieve peace and development for people in the province," said Zikalala.
