CHRIS Mahlangu, the man accused of killing AWB leader Eugène Terre'Blanche, will spend another night in prison though he was granted bail in the Ventersdorp magistrate's court yesterday.

Mahlangu's lawyer, Puna Moroko, said: "Money is not a problem. We will wait for the police to escort him to a safe place before we pay it."

He was speaking after the magistrate, Magaola Foso, granted Mahlangu R5 000 bail.

Moroko said they would not pay bail in front of AWB members. He said they had expected bail to be R3000 and were collecting more money to reach the R5000.

He said they would pay bail today or tomorrow.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lesogo Metsi said the police would escort Mahlangu to Hartebeesfontein, where he would pay his bail.

"No other security arrangement have been made for him to go to Mabopane outside of Pretoria."

He said after paying his bail Mahlangu would report to the Mabopane police station twice a day as part of his bail conditions.

"The accused was granted R5 000 bail," said NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga.

Foso said Mahlangu had co-operated with the police and there was no likelihood he would try to evade his trial.

"As NPA we respect the court's ruling. We will consider the judgment and decide on the next course of action," Mhaga said. "We have not taken a decision on whether to appeal or not."

The state had opposed bail, arguing that Mahlangu knew the identities and addresses of witnesses and that nothing would stop him from intimidating them.

Prosecutor George Baloyi said the evidence against Mahlangu was "overwhelming".

Mahlangu and a 15-year-old boy stand accused of striking Terre'Blanche 28 times with a panga and iron rod while he was asleep. They go on trial on November 22.
