The legendary Newtown jazz venue, Kippies, has not closed, the owner, Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, confirmed yesterday.

Mabuse, pictured, quashed rumours that the venue might not open again because of financial strain. The rumour of yet another closure was fuelled by the fact that the popular entertainment establishment had still not opened almost two months into the new year.

Kippies normally opens for business two weeks into the new year.

"No, we definitely have not closed down. We will be open for business either at the end of February or during the first week of March. It is just that we could not open early in the new year because the timing was not right.

"This is a cost-intensive business, needing quite a substantial amount of money to pay artists. And the time is not right for that. However, we will be back for business soon," he said.
