A newborn baby with its umbilical cord and placenta still attached was found dead and wrapped in a plastic bag inside a rubbish bin at the Durban Metro police offices on Old Fort Road on Sunday.
Durban police received an anonymous call from a member of the public alerting them about the baby. The caller claimed that he was throwing something into the rubbish bin when he discovered the body of a newborn baby stuffed in a plastic bag.
Durban police spokesman Michael Reed said: "We cannot comment because we do not know if the person who threw the baby into the rubbish bin was a member of staff of the Durban Metro or a member of the public."
It has not yet been established whether the baby was dead or alive when it was thrown into the bin.
