How to eat more healthily

I HAVE had quite a few e-mails from readers wanting advice on how to eat more healthily. Here are a few tips:

  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

We should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables everyday.

  • Eat more fish. Fish is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals.

Try to eat fish at least twice a week, especially the oily fish like salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, fresh tuna, sardines and pilchards.

  • Eat less saturated fat and sugar.

You need some fat in your diet, but you need to make sure it is the right type of fat. Too much saturated fat (found in hard cheese, cakes, biscuits, sausages, cream, butter and pies) will increase the amount of cholesterol in your blood, which will increase your risk of getting heart disease.

Unsaturated fat (such as vegetable oils, oily fish and avocados) are much healthier for you. - mylocalhealth.com; everydayhealth.com; dailystrength.org
