How to weather this winter

This past week’s cold and wet front is a taste of what is still to come this winter. As temperatures drop and wet roads become treacherous‚ here are a few tips for staying safe.

Ian Kaplan‚ of a Cape Town tyre and fitment centre‚ said being safe on the road means keeping your car in top form.

“Check that the tread on your tyres is correct‚ especially before and after that highly anticipated road-trip … Not only will your journey be smooth sailing‚ but having your tyre pressure checked could save you a couple of extra bucks.

“Next‚ check your exhaust for any loose clamps and leaks to avoid further damage to your vehicle.

“Winter places particular pressures on your [car’s] battery‚ whether you’re working the heater‚ driving with your lights on or using the wiper. Batteries tend to last a maximum of five years‚ so replacing one near the end of its lifespan can save you a lot of time and trouble‚” Kaplan said in a statement.

Apart from keeping your car’s engine in mint condition‚ you should also keep a clear head and take regular precautions such as watching your speed and driving with your headlights on.

Weather South Africa had not put any severe weather alerts out on Friday.
