HE IS a regular at SA Fashion Week. Thabo Maserumule, owner of men's couture line Thunderstorm Designs, sings the praises of his birthplace - Sekhukhune.
The fashion star says this is the place that fired up his love for fashion. We talk to him about the region named after King Sekhukhune, a king of the Marota (commonly known as the Bapedi) in Sekhukhuneland during the 18th century.
Sekhukhune is a cross-border municipality between Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
What do you like about Sekhukhune?
Sekhukhune is one of the most beautiful places in South Africa. I love its mountains and valleys.
They are part of the inspiration for my work. I also love the fact that it has more than 40 villages around it under Kgosi MM Matlala.
It is a rural area with an economic base in the fields of mining and agriculture. With good soil, a sub-tropical climate and the availability of reasonable quantities of water, the area boasts a strong and prosperous farming industry that consists of citrus, grapes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, peppers, beans, pumpkins, wheat, maize, cotton and tobacco.
The region is endowed with mineral resources like chrome, platinum and diamond deposits.
What are your favourite restaurants in Sekhukhune and why?
I love Oat Lodge (Jane Furse). It offers one of the best breakfasts in the area. When I'm in the area I usually pop in for a relaxed breakfast.
Where do you go for shopping when you are there and why?
I go to both Groblersdal and Marble Hall towns. They are both in close proximity to my village.
I also love the fact that you can bump into someone you know while doing your shopping.
What's your favourite hotel or B&B in Sekhukhune and why?
Oat Lodge and Restaurant in Jane Furse. The meals will definitely tantalise your taste buds. They use fresh ingredients and the staff is very friendly.
What makes Sekhukhune great?
It has a very rich history of royalty and superb natural landscapes that appeal to anyone visiting the area.
Where do you chill with your friends in Sekhukhune?
I am usually with my childhood friend and Thunderstorm Designs lawyer Abbey Magolo.
He owns the Lulu Bar lounge, which offers a variety of services from a car wash to buy and braai. It is the place to be.
Where would you go for entertainment as a tourist in Sekhukhune and why?
Mokgoma Matlala Dam. It's one of the biggest dams and it generates a lot of income for the Limpopo government.
It has great chill-out facilities with the best views of mountains that you can imagine.
What's your favourite shisanyama in Sekhukhune?
The Lulu Bar, definitely. The people who go there know what they are all about, so it is a nice place to catch up with worthwhile people.
