Nelson Mandela Bay is the best, says home gal Phinda

SHE is an acclaimed Sama winner, Afro-jazz singer and stage performer. Her name is Phinda Mtya-Matlala and she says her hometown, Nelson Mandela Bay, made her who she is musically.

She was born and bred in New Brighton township, shot to fame 10 years ago and has never looked back.

The former member of the group Mahube, a Southern African band featuring Oliver Mtukudzi and Steve Dyer, she credits Nelson Mandela Bay, previously known as Port Elizabeth, for nurturing many a music career.

Though she has moved to Polokwane, she still believes Nelson Mandela Bay is the best. She told Sowetan why she loves the city.

What do you like about Nelson Mandela Bay?

The windy city is blessed with extremely friendly, gifted and creative people.

The people are amazing. You still get that sense of community that is fast disappearing in other places. Nelson Mandela Bay is also very child friendly.

What are your favourite restaurants in the city?

Up The Kyber on King's Beach has an efficient service, great food and an exceptional view.

You have your meal on board a yatch and they offer a tailor-made meal for you.

Where do you shop in the city?

Green Acres and Walmer Park are both convenient, safe and shopper friendly. I always go there whenever I visit.

Which are your are your favourite nightspots?

KwaLunga, Kwa Jeya, and Kwa Barbra rock.

The Ekupholeni Leisure Centre in New Brighton has good food, great music, secure parking, a sports bar, braai, tours and game viewing.

What's your favourite tshisanyama in Nelson Mandela Bay?

Kwa KK Embizweni. The vibe is amazing. It is a place you want to be any Sunday afternoon.

Which place would you recommend for tourists?

Up the Kyber. If you want to keep it real ekasi take them to KwaLunga, KwaJeya, or KwaBarbras. We also have many game farms stretching to Grahamstown. If you are more inclined to go to the sea, you can charter a boat.
