A Durban schoolgirl’s passion for drama has landed her in an international talent competition in New York.

Caomhe Lalla‚ 11‚ of Isipingo‚ south of Durban‚ was awarded gold for her drama performance at Talent Africa’s regional and national competitions. Her exceptional performance in the junior category secured her a place among the South African team heading to New York next week.

Talent Africa is a talent scouting company that searches for the best talent in the country.

Lalla‚ a Grade 6 pupil at Manor Gardens Primary‚ needs sponsors to help cover the costs of her dream trip. Caomhe said she had dreamt of being on stage for as long as she can remember.

“I love drama and I love acting. I love playing different characters. I want to be an inspiration to other boys and girls‚ that they too can have a dream‚ have faith and work hard. My parents keep telling me that I need to do well at school to keep a balance so that I can have my dreams come true. I have done and will continue to try my best. I also want to act and be on stage. I feel alive on stage. I do need some help to get me to America. Please assist me and sponsor me. I will make you proud‚” said Caomhe.

Lalla’s mother‚ Debra‚ said because of her daughter’s passion for drama‚ she enrolled her in drama classes as an extra-mural activity at school.

“As parents we sometime believe that children have various preferences and dreams that they will outgrow. This is a dream that Caomhe has not outgrown. From the age of three when she could not read or write‚ she would often pretend that she was reading from the paper and would act for us‚” said Debra.

Debra said Caomhe would often say to her “I come alive when I am on stage”.

“When she watched a popular Disney show on television she’d say ‘one day I will go to New York’. It was as if she had known. This is a dream of an 11-year-old girl that can become a reality through the support of the people of South Africa who are encouraging kids to reach for their dreams. I am requesting your assistance to help me make her dream a reality‚” said Debra.

The costs for Caomhe are R53‚000.

“She is a determined little girl and has managed to maintain excellent grades‚” said Debra.

Melanie Ashcroft‚ director of Talent Africa‚ said there were 68 South Africans‚ from different genres of performing arts‚ that will be travelling to the US.

“Caomhe was one of our top performing acting candidates in the juniors’ category. She did exceptionally well in the nationals. In New York they are judged by scouts who are looking for young talent for Broadway‚ movies‚ adverts and catalogues. It is an opportunity for everyone to be seen than just purely a competition‚” said Ashcroft.
