'Stealthing': new dangerous non consensual sex trend

A new study explores a trend known as 'stealthing' where men 'sexually assault' women by taking off their condom during sex without their partner's consent.

In an investigation, lawyer Alexandra Brodsky from the National Women's Law Center, reveals a horrifying pattern of non-consensual condom removal during intercourse and also delves into the online communities that advocate for this practice.

When stealthing occurs a sexual situation that may be completely consensual can immediately become sexual assault in the eyes of the law.

The study found numerous online communities where men openly discuss their stealthing 'conquests' and share tips for future assaults.

Conducted for the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law, the study gives a name to an act many people have experienced as extremely violating and opens up the conversation about how we define sexual assault, sexual violence, and rape.

According to  Daily Mail Brodsky's research reveals that because of the 'gray areas' involved in stealthing, many victims are hesitant to confront the issue, let alone take legal action.

“A number of the people I talked to felt like because it wasn't something they'd heard discussed, because it wasn't something they had a name for, they struggled to know how to think about it in the context of other disrespectful and violent sexual experiences they'd had,"  Brodsky quoted in the Independent.

For some men the reason they remove condoms is because they prefer the feel of sex without wearing a condom while others do so to exert power over their partners.

In addition to the shame, confusion, and trauma that survivors of stealthing must deal with, they also face all of the potential consequences of unprotected sex, like pregnancy and STIs.

Huffington Post added that victims experience similar feelings to those who have been victims of other kinds of sexual violence, one victim in the study called the act “rape-adjacent.”

Brodsky writes, “that proponents of ‘stealthing’ root their support in an ideology of male supremacy in which violence is a man’s natural right.”
