Rietvlei Zoo Farm is nestled in the deep south of Johannesburg.
After several quick drives on Swartkoppies Road past the unassuming establishment near Alberton, I decided to stop and satisfy my curiosity, kids in tow.
Just under 40km from the Johannesburg CBD, the resort remains one of the hidden gems of the south.
It boasts a variety of activities to interest the whole family, travelling groups and school children.
In an educational setting, children interact with exotic birds, fluffy bunnies and farm animals while the parents lounge under willow and oak trees for a picnic. It's a farmyard experience in the city.
You can indulge in pony, steam train and tractor rides, putt putt, mini zipline, jungle gyms and edu-talks.
But if all you want is some quiet time in the serene surrounds of the wetlands, gardens and lawns, it's easy to find a calm spot and still not be disturbed by other revellers who may have their speakers blasting.
Children with their grandparents chasing geese around the wetlands is a precious sight to behold. For parties, you can rent out one of 17 lapas, four terraces in the picnic area or two halls.
All the venues are self-catering and picnic baskets, camping chairs, tables, umbrella/gazebo are welcome for a day of relaxation.
You can decorate the event and bring extra entertainment or team building activities.
The multipurpose resort also has fitness activities ranging from cycling trails, walk/run trails, soccer, women's bootcamp, crossfit to dancing, kick-boxing and golf driving range.
They also have a nursery and a car wash on the premises. And if sitting under trees is not enough, get pampered at the day spa.
The resort also offers bush camp accommodation for up to 60 people. The campsite includes six rondavels with bunk beds and mattresses, toilets, dining room, kitchen with fridge, electric stove and coal oven.
And the best part is the entrance fee, as low as R10 for pensioners and the disabled, R20 for children (under 13) and R30 for adults and older children. Kids under the age of two enter for free. Talk about good value for money.
