The Test Kitchen at Woodstock in Cape Town has been named as one of the best restaurants in the world. But don’t expect to recognise the meals – its “stand-out dish” is described as “Blinissoise” – chilled blini creme‚ barbecued langoustine “en gelée” langoustine tataki and liquorice powder.

This is exactly what won the establishment the title of Best Restaurant in Africa for 2015‚ and being ranked 28th out of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants this year‚ as the judges praised it for blazing a trail by using “innovative flavours coupled with impactful presentations”.

The Test Kitchen is the brainchild of British-born Luke Dale-Roberts. Unusual plates and bowls are designed to accompany and enhance dishes‚ notably his TK Concrete Ball‚ which sees two steaming concrete flowerpots arrive at the table containing kingklip grilled on hot charcoal. The finished plate pairs the fish alongside a snoek medley‚ black forest ham and fish jus‚ roasted potato skin purée and smoked red onion foam.

Located at Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill in the city’s up-and-coming arts district of Woodstock‚ the restaurant is praised for reflecting “its artistic surroundings in both its cuisine and décor‚ with its massive open-plan kitchen allowing diners to be part of the creative process”.

Dale-Roberts was named by the same awards as “one to watch” to 2013 and from being ranked at number 48 in the world in 2014.

The best restaurant in the world for 2015‚ according to the awards‚ is El Celler de Can Roca situated in Girona‚ Spain.
