About 20 years since its introduction, it seems International Masturbation month is still going strong.

Not that people intentionally wait for the May in order to touch themselves but a lot of people look forward to talking about this auspicious month.

The purpose is to raise awareness and promote masturbation as a way of “expression one’s sexuality” and to remove the stigma about it being a bad thing.

It all started in 1995 when surgeon-general Jocelyn Elders was fired by then United State’s president Bill Clinton following her speech at the United Nations World Aids Day where she called for masturbation to be part of the sex education curriculum for students.

“I think it (masturbation) is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught,” she said before being fired.

Five years later people at Good Vibrations launched what was called ‘Masturbate-a-thon” where participants masturbated to raise money for charity and dismiss the shame associated with masturbation. Talk about touching yourself for a good cause.

Since then, May is known as the International Masturbation Month.

Those who believe in different religious systems might find themselves in a bit of conundrum about whether to or not to participate. Here is what different religions say on the act of touching one’s self.

Christianity:

According to the Bible, when the act of masturbation is done as a form of lust, then it is considered a sin.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who has looked a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart,” according to Matthew 5:28.

It is also believed that because Bible gives way to sex when it is done by a married couple, meanwhile masturbation is done by an individual, it can be considered sinful since it takes away from Proverbs 5:18-19 – “Rejoice in the wife of your youth! A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you at all times, may you ever be captivated by her love.”

Buddhism:

This religion does not say people must not masturbate but Buddha’s rules for monks and nuns prohibit the act as they are supposed to live celibate.

Islam:

Masturbation is considered ‘haram’ or forbidden as Qur’an says people must refrain from ‘illegal sexual acts’.
