ROLENE Strauss yesterday returned to the humble vegetable garden at Leeuwkop Prison that she launched as Miss SA on Mandela Day last year to unveil her Beauty with a Purpose project as Miss World.

The ambitious garden, which has produced over a ton of veggies, is maintained by inmates and provides food to the pupils at nearby Leeuwkop Primary School.

Since her famous win last December the 22-year-old spends time between Johannesburg and London. Her whirlwind world tour schedule has taken her to countries in Asia, the Caribbean and the US.

"I was thrilled to see how well the project has done and what a difference it has made to many people - from the people involved in planting and harvesting to all those who benefited from what was grown.

"This project will not only give individuals fish, but teach them how to fish. Health, quality education and energy to work hard and reach your dreams are the fruits of balanced and good nutrition," the medical student said.

Strauss met fans and media at Maslow Hotel in Sandton yesterday where she was heavily protected by the team from Miss World.

Her life has changed since her crowning, but she has stayed true to her goal. "My goals have always been to be the best Miss World.

"I travel a lot and spend most of my time on planes," she said.

In her travels, she dabbles in different cultures and cuisines she remembers how when in China.

She ate a fish dish with snake.

"I can't say that's the most exciting or most pleasant experience, but I sure won't forget it. Snake actually tastes like chicken because it's white meat but very hard to chew," she laughed.

Strauss said she was surprised by how some people were still ignorant of her home country. "People still think South Africa is a rural place."
