IN what is seen as a way to uplift the community, Kwa-Ngono Women and Youth Arts and Culture Development is hosting an Easter arts and sport festival at Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal.

The event takes place during the Easter holidays from April 1 to April 8.

The KwaNgono Rural Women and Youth Easter Festival was established to create access to and overcome boundaries to the development of the arts and culture industry.

Thamsanqa Mtselu, marketing and communications officer, says the aim is to allow young talent and women to enter the market so they can begin to contribute to economic growth in a real and meaningful manner.

He says numerous art groups and soccer and netball teams around Nkandla will be part of the festival, showcasing their talent and skills.

"The KwaNgono project has been organised to uplift young upcoming talent so they know about general culture and entertainment.

"We are still looking for performing arts groups interested to the event, especially in the genres of traditional dance, music, poetry and drama.

"There will be a soccer tournament at Dlolwane sports field for U/13s and open teams."

"The first prizes for all winners will be a a trophy, prize money, a participation certificates and medals."

He says there will be groups from four provinces and the Thabisong netball team from Gauteng will be participating for the first time.

"The soccer tournament will be a top 8 with two teams from Gauteng and six from nearby areas.

"We encourage those who still want to be part of this in the areas of singing, dance or sports to contact us."

Art groups participate for free but tournament teams must pay a registration fee.
