MADIKWE Game Reserve is one of South Africa's best kept secrets.

The reserve borders Botswana and is located in North West, 90km north of Zeerust, about three and a half hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The reserve boasts a jaw-dropping 8000 animals from 27 major species.

Once simply farmland, the region has been restored to its former natural beauty and is one of the few game reserves in the world that is notable for its sustainable use of land that was formerly in a poor condition.

The reserve is also one of the few in Southern Africa that is malaria-free.

Located on the Botswana border, the luxury reserve is also only 20km from the Botswana capital Gaborone.

Madikwe lies in a transition region between Lowveld bushveld and Kalahari thornveld.

Madikwe Game Reserve is also home to a major tourist drawcard: all the members of the Big Five - black rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion.

There are a host of activities that await the visitor in and near to the reserve:

These are:

  • Bird watching
  • Guided walking safaris
  • Game drives in open safari vehicles
  • Wildlife photography
  • Bush dinners
  • Nearby attractions:
  • Pilanesberg National Park,
  • Sun City,
  • Johannesburg,
  • Pretoria,
  • Botswana border and Gaborone
