Designers are lining up for lavish wedding of President Jacob Zuma's former spin doctor with his sweetheart, Zama Ngubane

THE wedding of Zizi Kodwa - President Jacob Zuma's former spin doctor - is only a couple of months away and local fashion designers are falling over their feet to design a suit for him.

Kodwa, who is tying the knot with his sweetheart, Zama Ngubane, told Sowetan that since his wedding plans entered the public domain designers have been asking him to let them make his suit.

"I have been so busy that I have not had time to choose a designer. I have not even discussed it with my partner yet. She is the one who has to choose the colours and design. It is her day," Kodwa said.

SA Fashion Week founder Lucilla Booyzen says the benefit of having such a high-profile personality wearing a designer's clothes translates into a publicity windfall for small houses that cannot afford lavish advertising campaigns.

Booyzen advised designers likely to get the plum job to focus on design and detail.

"The fabric is of utmost importance and depends on the season, time and location of the wedding," she said.

"For example, a light wool-and-silk blend is suitable for summer. Darker tones work well for evening weddings and lighter tones for day weddings."

Booyzen said grey tones would work well since this is going to be a garden wedding.

"For a person of Zizi's stature there should be subtle, intricate detailing as opposed to bold and overly contrasting detailing."

What is anticipated to be a lavish bash co-ordinated by Zanele Mbokazi will take place at Durban's botanic gardens in December.

More than 700 guests are expected to attend.

Sources close to the couple say they are keeping the guest list a closely guarded secret. The bride-to-be has also kept her choice of dress designer secret.
