Khayelitsha author gets first book published

AFTER struggling to get her first book published, a Khayelitsha author has finally realised her dream.

Nondyebo Booi-Mtimde, 36, of Makhaza, joined the township's Ikapa Writers' Forum in August last year.

She also met author and novelist Eric Klaas, who shared his experience and expertise in writing novels, memoirs and other creative writing skills.

"Klaas and the writing forum encouraged and supported me to opt for a writing career. My confidence was boosted and learned new things after I attended a book launch hosted by the forum last year."

Empowering youth

Last month, Sowetan reported that the Ikapa Writers' Forum was empowering young people with creative writing skills who aimed to pursue writing as a career. The forum trained about 300 young people from Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Langa and Somerset West.

It offered skills in writing memoirs, novels, drama, poetry and short stories.

Booi-Mtimde's book is titled Gqabhuka Thumbadini (the boil must burst), and is a collection of 22 poems including an ode to the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup, Ikhaya Lami (my home) and Ubomi (life).

Message of hope

The book has been evaluated by the Department of Education and will be part of the curriculum for schoolchildren. Her first novel, Ndisole Bani? (Who to blame?), and another book, also a collection of poems, Yinina MzikaXhosa? (What is happening to the Xhosa nation?), will also be published in the near future.

"In my poems, I give hope to the youth and others who are hopeless about the future. I also address issues such as crime, single parenthood and HIV-Aids," Booi-Mtimde said. The book costs R80 and is published by Logical Books.
