Collect books 'for Mandela'

IN ONE of the most unique contributions to Nelson Mandela Day, the Department of Arts and Culture is launching a massive book collection and distribution campaign in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, on Sunday

While he helped the world to recognise and acknowledge the value of unity, goodwill and nation-building, Nelson Mandela's greatest love remains literacy development through a community development-centred reading culture.

Arts and culture department official Siphiwo Mahala, pictured, told Sowetan Nation Building this week that piles of books - which would be given to the local Makana municipality for distribution to poorly-equipped community libraries - would include Mandela's Conversations with Myself, Long Walk to Freedom (including translations and children's versions) as well as Nelson Mandela by Himself. South African book publishers will also contribute many other titles.

Mahala explained: "The department will spearhead a month-long book collection programme to celebrate Mandela Day.

"The first in a series of events to celebrate the legacy of Mandela will be held in Grahamstown on Sunday.

"This and other related activities will culminate with a national celebration of Nelson Mandela Day in Limpopo on July 18."
