Guides for women writers

FIVE scriptwriters selected by the National Arts Council will benefit from a playwrights mentorship programme at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival from June 30 to July 30.

It is titled So you think you can write? Script Reading and Mentorship Programme.

This year the writers are all women - Lindelwa Kisana from Cape Town, Petunia "Nunu" Moloi from Johannesburg, Precious Marobele from Limpopo , Nomahlubi Mangele from Eastern Cape and Lindiwe Ndlovu from KwaZulu-Natal.

The programme offers writers the opportunity to work with mentors, who will coach them. Finally scripts will be read by professional actors and Rhodes University Drama students during the festival .

The reading process allows the writers to detach themselves from their work and to hear their words read aloud by actors before a live audience.

This is the third edition of the mentorship programme.

The scripts are My dress was never white by Mangele and Ndlovu, Born Free by Moloi, My best friend Laughter by Kisana and Believe it or Not by Marobele.

The mentors are respected theatre writers and directors Bongi Ndaba and Mncedisi Shabangu.

The programme is managed by arts administrator Eugene Marillier-Malotana.
