Special bursaries for 30 youths up for grabs

BURSARIES of more than R30 000 each are up for grabs for 30 candidates in North West and Mpumalanga who qualify for a community counselling programme that is supported by Xstrata and Sowetan, writes Victor Mecoamere.

Open to unemployed youths in Steelpoort, Mpumalanga and Rustenburg, North West, this community development project is due to be run by academic development institution Health and Wellness Education Centre, equipping the qualifying beneficiaries with Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority-accredited certificates.

Fifteen youths from each of the two provinces will also receive monthly stipends, Health and Wellness Education Centre's Bev Katz, said this week.

Global mining group Xstrata, who boast a strong workplace-based voluntary HIV-testing and counselling culture, are backing the year-long programme.

Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula endorses the project and has opened community sports hubs throughout the country to be used as education, training and counselling sites.

Trauma, HIV-Aids, drug abuse counselling and social interventions for community members who cannot afford such crucial services is often provided by volunteers, most of whom are inadequately qualified or trained, or not all.

With this latest entry into the youth development portfolio of Sowetan's Aggrey Klaste Nation Building Foundation, qualifying candidates - who should come from from previously disadvantaged communities - stand to obtain Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority-accredited certificates.

This is expected to strengthen their chances of furthering their studies in the higher education and training sector, as well as enhance their employability.

Training is due to run between March 2011 and February 2012.

Applicants who have experience in working with communities either in nonprofit or nongovernmental organisations can send their CVs and a motivation of not more than 300 words, via fax to the Health and Wellness Education Centre on 011-656-6549. Applications close on February 21.
