Just being a woman

HARD times have lured women into telling a little fib, says Vusi Mazibuko, a Johannesburg based wardrobe consultant.

Mazibuko says half of the women he works with, mostly celebs, are involved in "fights" with their partners about their secret shopping trips.

"Though most of these women are well-known actresses, musicians and highly regarded independent women in society, most of them hide the true cost of their shopping trips.

"Some fib about the actual shops where they buy their clothes and shoes," Mazibuko says.

He says most of these women buy clothes for work and social events and their partners usually do not see the need for it. He says most of his clients do not tell their men the price of their clothes, not because they are afraid of their men but because they do not want to spoil a perfectly good shopping day by having to justify their shopping.

Asiphe Ndlela, a clinical psychologist, attributes women's shopping sprees to hormonal changes.

She says studies show that 10 days before their periods women are more likely to go on a spending spree. She says much of this can be explained by hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle.

Research shows that spending sprees are exaggerated in women with severe premenstrual tension . PMT is more common in women over the age of 30. Symptoms usually stop when a period begins.

She says shopping could be a way for premenstrual women to deal with negative emotions created by hormonal changes. She says another explanation might be that women buy items to make themselves feel more attractive - coinciding with the time of ovulation when they are most fertile, typically around 14 days before the start of a period.

She comes home without a bag in sight, waits until you leave the house, then rushes to the car, takes her haul out from under the blanket on the back seat and runs back inside to stash it all.

  • I bought it at "The Sale"

How long this one has been going is anyone's guess, but remember: "sale" does not mean free and, anyway, can she prove it?

l My sister, or friend, or mother gave it to me.

Pretty much anything can be passed off with this one.

  • So where does all the swag go?

Straight to the back of the wardrobe under a pile of old jumpers so that tags and bags can be dispensed with in our own time. Check regularly.

So you've noticed the new shoes and want to know how much?

If she tells you a figure that makes your jaw hit the floor, she's probably using this one.

Once she's had her fun, she'll reduce the figure to a more manageable one.

  • Change in season.
  • With winter long over, so are our sunny wardrobes. What's a girl to do, she can't wear boots and jackets in the sun, can she?Clothes Tags On The Bedroom Floor.
  • Sometimes women just get sloppy. Watch out for random price tags lying around the room. These can be slipped into your pocket and brought out later. Watch her squirm.Broke The Day After Payday?
