Retro and funky Fiat 500

THE new Fiat 500 cabriolet reminds me of a woman's handbag. Not because it's about the same size as the all-necessary accessory, but because of what can be fitted into the limited space.

In fact, I can remember a former colleague of mine who used to carry everything - and I mean everything - in her handbag. From nail clippers to headache tablets, a bottle of something for "medicinal purposes" to a can of pepper spray.

But this is meant to be about the 500 Cab and not her handbag, so back to the little Italian beauty ... the car that is!

The Fiat 500 Cab is one of those vehicles you either instantly love ... or are indifferent to.

Available in 12 different colours - I would love to see the yellow! - the car immediately stands out for its individualistic qualities.

Its exterior design harks back to its original lines and is as retro and funky as you can get.

The electronically removable fabric roof panel is available in two colours - red or tan - and has a nice innovation to it.

You basically have three settings to it ... closed, half open, completely open. And the roof can be activated at the push of a button while travelling at speeds up to 40 kmh.

The 500 gets its name from the original engine size (500cc) of the 1957 model, but thankfully there is something a little beefier in this modern-legend?

Well, just about everything you'd want!

As standard features you will get air conditioning, a great little sound system, central locking, electric windows, power steering and alloy wheels.

On the safety front you have ABS brakes, EBD (electronic brake distribution), hill assist, immobiliser and a generous seven airbags.

Boot space is minimal and though advertised as a five-seater the reality is you will battle to get two adults in the rear.

But then, again, that's not what this vehicle is about.

It's about being young, having fun and enjoying a different driving experience.

If that sounds like you, test drive the 500 convertible ... you won't be disappointed.
