Tshwane Gospel Choir set to reach great heights

TSHWANE Gospel Choir, which has just had successful concerts, is looking forward to the launch of their DVD

The DVD that was recorded late last year at the University of South Africa.

With the date of the launch confirmed for March this year, just in time for the Easter holidays, the future looks promising for this choir.

Launched in 2009, making it one of the significant voices on the local gospel scene, the choir competes against established choral outfits in the country such as Joyous Celebration. It is also run as a full-time business, complete with a board of directors among other structures.

"Tshwane Gospel Choir is certainly revolutionising the music industry," sayd the choir's founder Bheki Langa, a prominent Tshwane-based businessman.

"The choir has emerged as a different brand in the music fraternity."

It has gathered all its musicians from the locals, as a means of identifying the untapped talent from the local communities of Tshwane and surrounding areas.

One will wonder if this is the only choir that has two blind musicians on the team?

Those behind the choir say this is the only way to showcase its commitment to empowering the locals, including people with disabilities.

"This is also the only choir that has its musicians on a fixed contract, going an extra mile to assist them with their educational studies, and getting them trained in personal financial management," Langa says.

"One of the main objectives is to ensure that it does not produce celebrities, but produces icons from a holistic development."

Judging by the last performances at two events that attracted a large audience, one can boldly say that this choir is on a journey that is going to leave a mark in the music industry.

The choir has recently recorded a live DVD at the Unisa's ZK Matthews Hall, which was packed to capacity.

The choir a uniting spirit, judging by attendance at the last performance, which featured a number of musicians including the likes of Solly Moholo and Mathapelo at the State Theatre in Pretoria.

Langa says he is looking for a possible reputable company to distribute the DVD, though he stresses that he will consider only reputable companies that are not in the business of "ripping-off" musicians.
