Bringing fresh musical elements from the DRC, Joelle XO is a pop artist with an international sound aiming to capture the hearts of music lovers.

Listening to her music, one can pick up bits of indie sounds and hip-hop influences. The 29-year-old was born in the DRC and moved to SA shortly after her birth as her parents were in search of "a better life".

"I discovered my love for music when I was just nine years old. I listened to the likes of Kenny G, Aaliyah and Mariah Carey, who inspired my craft," says XO.

With the support of her parents, she has charged ahead in her career choice. "My father even bought me a stereo so I could record myself singing, so I would always record myself just so I could hear what I was working with."

XO has released three singles this year and a video of Gunz, which enjoyed some rotation on MTV Base. Having sworn not to expose her possible collaborations in her upcoming projects, she only hints that she is working on a song with a well-known local rapper.

She looks forward to expanding her brand overseas as well.

"I would love to explore into other musical sections and try going into the acting world."

Aware of the impact she possibly has on younger aspiring singers, XO gives advice to them: "You have to believe in yourself, don't stop fighting for your dream because only you can make things happen for yourself.

"Don't ponder too much on your parents not understanding your path; with time they will come on board."
