Lotus FM radio show host quits after 'threat' by manager

Lotus FM’s Morning Rush show presenter‚ Neville Pillay‚ has called it quits after a run-in with a colleague.

Pillay‚ known for his locally produced skits‚ song parodies and scam calls‚ quit on Thursday after a colleague allegedly swore at him and threatened to cut him down to size.

Lotus FM is the country’s only national Indian radio station.

Pillay took to social media on Sunday to explain why he quit.

He said at a staff meeting last Thursday he questioned the state of the station’s studio‚ adding that it was in poor shape and was held together by sticky tape.

“This isn’t a reflection on our programme manager‚ rather the SABC as a whole.”

Pillay said when he asked what was to be done‚ a manager interjected and said: “You guys don’t deserve any new equipment cos you put your feet up on the desk and eat in the studio.”

“I agree I do put my feet up on the desk every now and then‚ but I said‚ we don’t eat in the studio . He then proceeded to tell me‚ ‘I will f.. ing cut you down to size‚ you hear me.’ I was shocked because up to this point I’ve had nothing but good relations with this guy‚ never once had a run in with him since he started there a short while ago. I even had to confirm with my colleagues that he was talking to me.

“I immediately thought of my two little girls‚ what if this guy actually does physically beat me up? I literally feared for my life‚” he wrote.

“Never in my entire radio career has anyone in management spoken to me that way. I don’t walk in there with a chip on my shoulder. I’m at every meeting and every event without fail‚ being a part of this team. That’s when I made the immediate decision to walk out‚ I didn’t respond to him‚” said Pillay.

He also claimed that management had watched and did not intervene. He said he did not want his job back.

“I do hope he is disciplined severely for treating people this way in what is supposed to be a safe working environment. I’m really upset that I never even got to say goodbye to anyone‚ most especially the listeners. I hope justice prevails and this guy gets what he deserves. As for me‚ this was a sign from God that I need to use the talent he gave me to continue to entertain my people and I don’t need a radio station to do it‚” wrote Pillay.

Pillay said during his 21 years on radio he never had a run-in with any manager‚ never spoke down to or had conflict with any staff.

Pillay’s post on Facebook received hundreds of comments.

Ravi Ramsamy said: “Lotus FM breakfast revenue will drop dramatically. To the marketing manager and the idiots who stood by and allowed that kind of behaviour you guys should be ashamed! I will not listen to your show again! We will follow you Neville.”

Actor Rajesh Gopie commented: “You were the best thing there. Energy‚ originality‚ spontaneity. It’s time to move up and on. This is an opportunity in disguise and the universe is conspiring to help you achieve bigger things. You don’t owe anyone anything.”

Station manager Alvin Pillay said because of SABC policy he could not respond to questions and sent them to the communications department which did not respond.
