SABC station manager Rio Mabunda charged

After 10 months on suspension, Ligwalagwala FM station manager Rio Mabunda has finally been charged.

He was suspended in July with events coordinator Mfanimpela Ndlala, for allegedly misusing funds during the station's birthday bash.

According to sources, Mabunda will appear before a SABC disciplinary hearing tomorrow on five charges.

The charges include failing to sign a legal contract with the venue that hosted the anniversary bash.

Mabunda is also charged with failing to return a tablet that belongs to the SABC. When Sowetan contacted Mabunda yesterday, he referred all questions to the SABC.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said: "Mabunda has been charged, and the process has started.

"The process was instituted after the investigation process was concluded."

The station manager is among many SABC employees who continue to earn salaries while sitting at home.

Kganyago said paying people sitting at home does worry them but there are processes that had to be followed.

Two weeks ago, listeners marched to the SABC offices in Mpumalanga demanding Mabunda's reinstatement.

The listeners have since started a Facebook page called "Bring Back Rio Mabunda".

The station was further accused of failing to host social events such as the orphans party and the station's annual birthday party, which were Mabunda's concepts. The group intended to stage a mass march to the SABC again.
