Gospel star Ntokozo Mbambo has been nominated for the 3rd African Muzik Magazine Awards (Afrimma).

The international awards nominations were announced last week and the ceremony will be held on October 15 in Dallas, Texas, in the US.

The Durban-born star was nominated in the best gospel category alongside Frank Edwards, Sinach, and Uche Agu (all from Nigeria); Willy Paul (Kenya); SP Koffi Sarpong and Sonnie Badu (Ghana), and Toronto-based Icha Kavons (Congo).

The voting public will decide the winner in this category.

Recently returned from a tour of the UK, Mbambo said she regarded the nomination as a huge achievement in her career.

"It is a big honour to be selected as one of the best artists who stand out on the whole continent," she said.

Being nominated meant that what she had been trying to achieve with her sound was actually working.

The award-winning gospel singer has been trying to create a sound that appeals to both local and international audiences.

"I have managed to capture that through my music style, the message and approach.

"Being nominated is the biggest encouragement and a big pat on the back."

She first learnt about her nomination on social media before the organisers sent her an email.

Mbambo, whose career began at age 14 with Joyous Celebration, is an established name in SA.

She has opened for acclaimed international stars such as Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin and Cece Winans.

Mbambo's albums include Spirit and Life (Live), Filled (Live), Keep On Believing (Live In Pietermaritzburg), Ntokozo Mbambo, Nqubeko and Ntokozo Gospel Hits.

The ceremony promises to be an explosive affair.
