To mark 10 years since the death of kwaito singer Lebo Mathosa, her family will establish a foundation in her honour.

The Lebo Mathosa Foundation is a collaborative effort between the family and Showbizafrica.

Mathosa died in a car crash in 2006.

The foundation will be launched officially on July 28 at Hard Rock Cafe on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

Thulani Mbatha, the founder of Showbizafrica and Mathosa's childhood friend, said the foundation was aimed at executing joint campaigns that will focus on women and youth empowerment initiatives.

"The activities will include workshops and forums to drive career expos, and mentorship programmes from Grade 10 to Grade 12 pupils who are looking at career options."

He said the idea started when he wanted to transform his father's house in Daveyton, where Mathosa also comes from, into a creative studio to empower up-and-coming freelancers and entrepreneurs wanting a career in music, media and advertising.

Mbatha said the beneficiaries will be absorbed into his company.

Mathosa's father Solly, 58, said the family were happy to see the foundation launched.

He said it was overdue.

"As part of the launch we want to remix Lebo's music catalogue and release it again. Her younger brother, who is currently a hip-hop DJ, is the first person to be mentored by the foundation. He also wants to remix the songs."

The Centre of Creativity in Daveyton will be home to the Lebo Mathosa Foundation.
