Hip hop performer Gigi Lamayne is on Wednesday releasing a #FeesMustFall single and video as she graduates from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media and Anthropology.
“Today I graduate at Wits university. My single mother struggled to see this day‚” the Ice Cream and Jungle Fever hit-maker tweeted.
She announced she was releasing a #FeesWillFall audio-visual at noon to coincide with her graduation‚ after a dramatic year of student protests at universities countrywide in demand of zero fee increases for 2016 and government subsidies to ensure free tertiary education.
Her management company DreamTeam SA boasted in a statement that Lamayne was top of her class.
“Gigi Lamayne is graduating with four distinctions and is also graduating as the top third-year Media Studies student‚ for which she will be awarded the Media Monitoring Africa Prize at a prize-giving ceremony on 14 April 2016‚” the company said in a statement.
“Gigi Lamayne hopes her achievements will inspire other young South Africans as well as young and upcoming musicians to take both their craft and education seriously.”
Lamayne was virtually unknown in the mainstream until her Ice Cream remix featuring Khuli Chana‚ despite being a four-time winner at the SA Hip-Hop Awards.
Born Genesis Gabriella Tina Manney in Lenasia‚ her street craft was shaped by the many places in which she grew up around Johannesburg‚ including Soweto‚ Eldorado Park and the cultural melting pot of Yeoville.
She also spent part of her childhood in England on a Branson Scholarship‚ where she was not shy to put her poetic and rapping skills against local MCs in contests.
“I grew up in all these places because my mom was working as a nurse in the UK. My influences are varied‚ most importantly the places I lived in. But I have also been inspired by Bob Marley‚ Brenda Fassie and Tupac Shakur‚” she told the Sowetan in an interview last year.
Lamayne said her Wits degree would help her explore new forms of media to advance her music career.
