MTV has teamed up with local broadcaster e.tv to produce a local version of Lip Sync Battle Africa.

The hit entertainment show hosted by LL Cool J, pictured, has gained a cult following for its unique mix of music and celebrity.

It features commentary by supermodel Chrissy Teigen (wife of John Legend).

The local series will air on MTV (DStv channel 130) and sister channel MTV Base (DStv channel 322) before making its terrestrial premiere on e.tv.

It will be recorded in Johannesburg and the 13 half-hour episodes will be broadcast from April 14.

The formula remains the same with vocal showdowns between top celebrities and entertainment figures, complete with dancers, wigs, costumes, props and tons of swag.

Each battle will consist of two celebrities miming to popular tracks of their choice. Each contestant must sync to two songs - one of which will be by an African artist. The winner is chosen by the live studio audience.

The two local hosts will be announced at a later stage.

Dillon Khan, head of MTV Africa, said they were "thrilled" by the partnership. Monde Twala, MD: e.tv channels division, commented that the partnership was ground-breaking. "It's an extension of e.tv's goal to bring the viewers fresh home-grown content with a special twist," he said.

Lip Synch Battle gained global success since its 2015 launch on Spike TV in the US.
