'Once upon a time I wanted to be a Dr'- How Mpho Maboi ended up in sports

She’s one of the most prominent woman in SA sports but it’s been a long journey to sporting fame for Mpho Maboi.

Mpho is on her way to cover her first Olympics and on the eve of her arrival in Rio‚ she reflected on her journey so far.

What many might not know is that growing up Mpho wanted to be a Dr. But her plans later changed in high school when she chose to chase after a career in commerce.

But even that dream was short lived.

“After completing a year towards a BComm degree and being awarded a full scholarship‚ I decided I wanted to study Information Technology. After completing my diploma‚ I was in the IT industry for almost a decade‚” she reflected in an Instagram post this week.

Little did she know that soon the entertainment bug would bite and she would be sacrificing her IT career for one in sport.

“After juggling both radio and IT for almost 3 years... From entertainment radio I ended up in sport tv. In my IT career I got to travel the world. Sport tv has expanded on that... I’ve lived a full life‚ never being afraid to step out my comfort zone and challenge myself‚ ” she explained.

She said that her journey has had many highs and lows‚ and has on occasion left her “absolutely broke“. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s been an amazing ride... Life has indeed been kind to me... I am grateful‚” she wrote.
