David Bowie's family are planning to hold a private funeral to bid farewell to the late singer, who died on Sunday (10.01.16).

It was reported on Wednesday (13.01.16) that the legendary star's body had been cremated shortly after his death aged 69 on Sunday (10.01.16). But now David's family have released a statement confirming they will in fact hold a small, private service to pay their own respects to the singer.

The statement, posted on David's official Facebook page, read: ''The family of David Bowie is currently making arrangements for a private ceremony celebrating the memory of their beloved husband, father and friend. ''They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times.''

David's death came after he battled against cancer for 18 months before losing his fight against the disease. While the family are planning the small funeral, the singer had reportedly told his nearest and dearest not to hold a big service because he didn't want any fuss to surround his passing.

A source told the Daily Mirror: ''In many respects you don't need a memorial or service to remember David by ... you have his music instead. ''He would have wanted to just disappear with no fuss, no big show, no fan-fare.'' Meanwhile, David's close friend and longtime producer Tony Visconti told Rolling Stone magazine that the singer was planning to release a follow-up to his final release 'Blackstar', which hit shelves just a few days before his death.

Tony said he spoke to David just a week before his death, at which point the singer was under the impression he would have longer to live. He said: ''A that late stage, he [David] was planning the follow-up to 'Blackstar,' '' Bowie's longtime producer Tony Visconti told Rolling Stone on Wednesday. ''I was thrilled, and I thought, and he thought, that he'd have a few months, at least.''
