Chwetel Ejiofor, the lead star of the Hollywood film 12 Years A Slave, will perform a South African story at the Royal Court Theatre in London later this month.

Mama The Storm Is Outside, penned by Napo Masheane, will see Ejiofor in a one-man act at the 2015 Children's Monologues.

The initiative dramatises the testimonies of young children growing up in Rammulotsi, a township in the small town of Viljoenskroon in Free State. Other shows will star the likes of James McAvoy, Josh Hartnett and Christopher Eccleston.

It was started by the London theatre in a bid to raise funds to refurbish and extend an arts centre in Free State.

The theatre put out a call for writers to submit their work, which the experienced Masheane did.

Oscar nominee Ejiofor chose Masheane's work from among many scripts that were submitted to theatre directors of the Royal Court Theatre.

Masheane, who is still on cloud nine, sees this as an affirmation of her work.

"I was so excited when I was told the news. I had to search him on the internet to make sure that it was real that an actor of his stature would be doing the story," she gushed.

Masheane seems to have hit the right note by writing a monologue that appeals to a global audience.

"I am happy that my work through story telling is getting an international platform and I believe that this is something to celebrate here at home.

"They wanted scripts that will be based on some of the testimony of over 200 South African children. I chose a testimony of this young boy from Free State," said Masheane.

The story relates the pain of travelling a long distance to the clinic while sick. She said she chose to tell the story through the eyes of a child in rural Free State as she could relate because she grew up there.

"I could relate because I lived among poor people. I know what it is like for kids from villages to walk long distances to school."
