Black Coffee looks strong

Following his nomination at the DJ Awards in Ibiza, Spain, Black Coffee has bagged another big one at the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mama).

Coffee, together with nine other African musicians who include local rapper HHP, have been nominated in the Evolution award for African over-achievers.

The SA duo is nominated alongside Nigerian foursome 2Face, D'banj, Asa and P-Square; Fally Ipupa of the DRC; Samini of Ghana and Uganda's Chameleone.

Tim Howard, the channel's director, said the award honoured "established artists who have made an indelible mark on African and global music culture, taken African music to new territories around the world and shaped the soundscape of contemporary Africa".

In the DJ Awards, set for September, Coffee received a nod in the breakthrough category. He has released four critically acclaimed albums and broke new ground when he released his Africa Rising DVD. The DJ is currently in the US on his global Summer Tour.

HHP on the other hand has also worked his way up to be recognised with the Mama nomination. In 2009 he made headlines when he paid R100 000 to work with US rapper Nas in one of his songs, Keledimo.

The awards are scheduled for next month in Durban.
