Naledi Award winner Zethu Dlomo has set her sights on Theatre directing.

The 26-year-old actress from Dobsonville, scooped the The Brett Goldin Award for Best Newcomer at this week's 11th Naledi Theatre Awards for her adaptation of Have You Seen Zandile, ashort story by veteran arts all-rounder Gcina Mhlope.

"It is wonderful to win and this will open more channels in the theatre industry for me and will give me a voice in the happenings and shaping of our industry.

"Acting is my calling and my gift. I'm up with it and I'm down with it, but I am never without it. I would like to venture into directing and perhaps even producing some day, as long as I'm still part of the industry," Dlomo said.

The BA drama graduate from Wits University is currently shooting the third season of Black Sails, the American adventure drama series. Dlomo is part of the Thenx Ladies, a group working on their next show called The Triple M Mammmas that will show later this month at the Pop Art Centre in Johannesburg.

As if that was not enough, Dlomo will feature in a production which will see two plays - The Proposal and The Bear - adapted into present-day Mzansi.

Performing and telling stories has been part of her life from an early age.

"I have a passion for telling stories and telling them well. So I want to go back to school and continue with my studies and broaden my understanding and knowledge."

Dlomo achieved mild fame in her role as the ambitious and straight-shooting police officer Alice Kunene in Room 9, an SABC1 science fiction series.

But it was as Dinky Magubane in the highly acclaimed film Fanie Fourie's Lobola where she rose her artistic bar.

Dlomo has also featured in a number of theatre productions including The Hill and You Fool, How Can the Sky Fall?, both directed by James Ngcobo.

Last Tuesday, Dlomo was engaged by her long term boyfriend Lebogang Mphahlele on her birthday. He flew to Cape Town where she is shooting and waited for her to finish on set and took her to a restaurant where he proposed.
