Peabo Bryson leads the line-up of this year's Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. Bryson, 64, is the American R&B and soul crooner of romantic duets and love songs such as Beauty and the Beast with Celine Dion and A Whole New World, featuring Regina Bell.

Another attraction at the festival scheduled for September 24 to 26 will be jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller. The star-studed line-up dominated by experienced and legendary musicians was unveiled by the organisers yesterday in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Hugh Masekela leads the local bill which includes Jimmy Dludlu, Vusi Mahlasela, Nduduzo Makathini and Steve Dyer. Zimbabwean Oliver Mtukudzi will also feature with the Shai-Shai Mbira Ensemble. Overseas talent also includes Cecile McLorin Salvant, The 3 Cohens, and Yellow Jackets from the US, and Matthew Halsall from the UK. From Cape Verde is Sara Tavares.

Hazel Chimhandamba, head of group sponsorships at Standard Bank, toasted the 16th year of the contract they had with the festival, adding that the collaboration was to run until 2017.

Peter Tladi of T-Musicman, the founder of the festival, said he was thankful to the sponsors who have helped to minimise the impact of cost for music lovers.

"It democratises access to great music. Jazz is, after all, the music of democracy," Tladi said yesterday.

Tickets are on sale at Computicket as from today.
